Canterbury Recreational 4WD Club

Welcome

The Club

The Club was formed in 2002 by a group of experienced four wheel drivers, who wanted a club for off-road trips that could be completed by standard or only slightly modified four wheel drive vehicles.

The Club still follows that founding principle and does a full range of off-road trips from easy, (Grade 1 & 2), to hard, (grade 4 & 5), for all levels of both vehicle capability and driver experience.

New Members

All new members must complete a Club training day that introduces them to the safe recovery practises that CR4WD uses as well as the “nuts and bolts” of how CR4WD runs and organises its trips. For some members the training day is the first introduction to four-wheel driving so each individual vehicles capabilities and equipment are discussed and checked with suggestions made for improvements or additions that are needed.

Refresher training days are also compulsory for all members after a set period of time with the Club so that everyone can keep up to date with the latest techniques and safe practises involved with vehicle recovery.

Tread lightly

Tread lightly has become the catchphrase for responsible four-wheel drivers worldwide and our Club is no different. CR4WD was the first 4WD Club in New Zealand to introduce a tyre size limit for a 4WD Club. Tyre sizes are limited to 33 inches in diameter or equivalent, (e.g. 285/75X16 or 255/85X16) for Club trips. This was done to limit damage to the environments we use and has enabled CR4WD to gain access to a number of properties that would otherwise be off limits to four wheel drivers.
